Plain-English summary
Pharyngeal disorders, which affect the throat area, are not very common in dogs and cats. When pets have these issues, they often show signs of difficulty swallowing, known as dysphagia. The chapter talks about the different possible causes of swallowing problems and highlights specific challenges when placing feeding tubes in the throat. Overall, it aims to help veterinarians better understand and manage these conditions in pets.
Abstract
Disorders of the pharynx are relatively uncommon in the dog and cat. There are a number of potential causes of pharyngeal problems, but the underlying presenting clinical sign is that of dysphagia. This chapter will discuss the differential diagnosis of dysphagia with emphasis on oropharyngeal swallowing disorders. A separate discussion of special considerations to be made in the placement of pharyngostomy tubes also will be presented.
