Original publication title: Syringomyelia in a thoroughbred foal.

Species:
horse

Plain-English summary

This report discusses a case involving a 5-month-old part-Thoroughbred foal with a spinal cord issue called syringomyelia, which is the formation of fluid-filled cavities in the spinal cord. In this foal, the cavities were found in a large area from the neck to the upper back, and there were also changes in the normal structure of the spinal cord. The exact cause of this condition is not known. Unfortunately, the report does not provide information on any treatments or outcomes for this foal.

Abstract

The report describes a case of myelodysplasia involing spinal cord segments C7 to T8 of a 5 month old part-Thoroughbred foal. There was a single extensive syringomyelic and hydromyelic cavity which extended from the seventh cervical segment (C7), to the seventh thoracic segment (T7), abnormal size and shape of central canal, and disorderly differentiation of the grey and white matter. The cause of the defect is unknown.
