Original publication title: Tetanus in the cat--an unusual presentation.

Species:
cat

Plain-English summary

A cat with a neglected wound was brought in showing signs of persistent muscle stiffness but was still alert and responsive. Tetanus, which is rare in cats, was suspected due to these symptoms. Quick diagnosis and treatment are crucial for recovery. If your cat has a wound and shows unusual muscle rigidity, it’s important to see a vet right away for proper care.

Abstract

Tetanus is rare in cats owing to their innate resistance. Clinical diagnosis may not be obvious in the early stages of the disease when characteristic signs of generalised tetanus are absent. However, the history of a penetrating/neglected wound and the presence of persistent involuntary muscle rigidity in a mentally alert animal should always lead to the suspicion of tetanus. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are the keys to a successful outcome.
