Original publication title: THE FELINE LEISHMANIOSE IN THE REGION OF ALGIERS

Species:
cat

Plain-English summary

A group of roaming cats in Algiers was tested for leishmaniasis, a disease caused by a parasite. About 36% of the 50 cats tested positive, with males being more affected than females. The disease primarily impacted young cats aged 1 to 2 years, and the most common symptom observed was ulceration on their skin. This finding suggests that cats could be a potential source of the parasite in the area. More research is needed to understand how widespread the disease is and how to diagnose it effectively.
