ABSTRACTFollowing a brief account of the history of the therapeutic use of cold in medicine, the paper discusses the basic principles involved in producing satisfactory instruments for conveniently achieving low temperatures.Consideration is given to some of the machinery currently available for the production of cryolesions‐from the cheap simplicity of the authors self‐made probes to the most sophisticated and expensive equipment available in the field of cryosurgery.
