Plain-English summary
A 5-year-old Thoroughbred stallion was brought to a veterinary clinic because he had diarrhea, and the cause was not known. The treatment focused on stopping the diarrhea and making sure he was properly hydrated. The veterinarians used lab tests to find out what imbalances he had due to the diarrhea. They gave him antibiotics and corticosteroids along with fluids to help him recover. The treatment was aimed at correcting the issues caused by the diarrhea, and it was successful in restoring his health.
Abstract
A 5 year old Thoroughbred stallion with diarrhoea of unknown aetiology was referred to Davis. Treatment was aimed at terminating diarrhoea and restoring normal fluid status. Laboratory aids were utilised to establish where inbalance and deficits were present. Antibiotics and corticosteroids were used as an adjunct to fluid therapy. The case history and rationale of treatment of fluid disorders resulting from diarrhoea are discussed.
