Original publication title: True Bilateral Hermaphroditism in a Beagle: A Case Report

Species:
dog

Plain-English summary

A 4-year-old Beagle was diagnosed with true bilateral hermaphroditism, meaning she had both male and female reproductive organs. The dog had a normal vagina but also had a phallus protruding from her vulva, along with other male reproductive structures. Genetic testing confirmed she was a female at the chromosomal level. This condition is rare and can lead to various health considerations, so it's important for pet owners to consult their veterinarian if they notice unusual reproductive traits in their pets.

Abstract

SUMMARY True bilateral hermaphroditism was diagnosed in a 4-year-old Beagle. The dog had a normal vagina with a phallus protruding from the vulva and a bicornuate uterus with gonads attached. Histopathologically, bilateral ovotestes, vas deferens, epididymis, and os penis were identified. The dog was a genetic female as determined by karyotype analysis of leukocytes.
