Abstract
Previous studies have indicated that kidney-resident macrophages and kidney-infiltrating macrophages may fulfill fundamentally distinct functions in kidney diseases. However, characterizing the roles of each population has been challenging because of their shared lineage. Hong et al. demonstrated that anti-colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor antibody specifically targets and eliminates kidney-resident macrophages in the interstitial area with subclinical injury and exacerbates mouse kidney injury models. This research revealed that kidney-resident macrophages may play a novel role in the clearance of apoptotic cells or in the suppression of local inflammation to maintain homeostasis.
