Abstract
This article provides a review of emerging hepatobiliary diseases in zoologic companion species. Predisposition to hepatic pathology varies among species and is influenced by genetic factors, natural history, dietary composition, and how these factors are replicated in captivity. This article focuses on the updates of selected hepatic accumulation disorders, including copper-associated hepatopathy in sugar gliders and ferrets, hepatic lipidosis in reptiles, and iron storage disease in avian species, as well as liver lobe torsion in rabbits and cholecystolithiasis in bearded dragons. For a thorough understanding, this article reviews the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approach, and therapeutic strategies for each condition.
