Plain-English summary
This study looked at 13 horses that had stones in their bladder or urethra. Most of the horses had one or two stones, and they generally did well after treatment. However, three horses had a more complicated issue with sandy deposits in their bladder, which was linked to bladder paralysis, and they did not respond well to treatment. Overall, the treatment worked well for most of the horses.
Abstract
The presenting signs, treatment and postoperative progress of 13 horses with vesical and urethral calculi are reviewed. Single, discrete stones were present in 10 animals in which the results of treatment were generally good. In three horses with sabulous cystic deposits, urolithiasis was associated with bladder paralysis and the response to treatment was poor.
