Plain-English summary
In May 2011, an outbreak of dourine, a disease caused by a parasite, was reported in Italy after a stallion tested positive during routine checks for breeding. The case involved a mare that showed clear signs of the disease, which was likely the source of the infection for the stallion. The diagnosis was confirmed through clinical signs, tissue examination, and lab tests. This situation highlights the importance of monitoring and testing in preventing the spread of infectious diseases among horses.
Abstract
In May 2011, dourine was reported in Italy following the declaration of a positive result observed in a stallion undergoing routine testing for stud purposes. Clinical signs, anatomo-histopathological findings and laboratory results that resulted in the confirmation of diagnosis of dourine in a clinically affected mare, which was the likely source of infection in the stallion, are described.
