Original publication title: A giant congenital pigmented nevus in a horse.
- Species:
- horse
Plain-English summary
This case discusses a large, colored birthmark (called a pigmented nevus) found on a horse, which is something that hasn't been commonly seen in pets. The horse had a noticeable nerve-related feature in the mark, which raised concerns about a condition called neurofibromatosis, where tumors can form on nerves. This is the first time such a large pigmented nevus has been reported in a horse. The outcome of the case is not specified, so we don't know if any treatment was needed or what happened afterward.
Abstract
Pigmented nevi have not been widely recognized in domesticated animals. We describe, for the first time, a giant congenital pigmented nevus in a horse. Because of a prominent neuroid component within the lesion, neurofibromatosis was the major differential diagnosis.
