Abstract
This article discusses the keeping of small groups of pigs, their breeds and the reasons for keeping them. The role of the veterinary practitioner is outlined, together with the input required from the practice. A protocol for an initial visit is suggested and the legal requirements to be followed by the client keeping backyard pigs are laid out in detail.
