Plain-English summary

A 7-year-old male horse was losing weight, so vets used a special camera to look inside his throat. They found that his soft palate, which is the back part of the roof of the mouth, was underdeveloped on both sides and had a noticeable tissue mass. After the horse passed away, a thorough examination confirmed this condition, known as bilateral hypoplasia of the soft palate. Unfortunately, the treatment options for this condition are limited, and the outcome was not favorable.

Abstract

Endoscopic examination of a 7-year-old gelding with weight loss indicated a palatal defect with a prominent tissue mass at the caudomedial margin of the defect. At necropsy, the condition was determined to be bilateral hypoplasia of the soft palate.
