Original publication title: Idiopathic Aplastic Anemia in a Dog

Species:
dog

Plain-English summary

A 5-year-old mixed-breed dog was diagnosed with idiopathic aplastic anemia, a serious condition where the bone marrow doesn't produce enough blood cells, leading to symptoms like weakness and lethargy. Tests showed a significant drop in all types of blood cells, and the dog's bone marrow was not functioning properly. Unfortunately, the specific cause of the anemia couldn't be identified, and treatment options were limited. It's crucial for pet owners to be aware of this condition and consult their veterinarian if they notice signs of weakness or unusual behavior in their dogs.

Abstract

SummaryA case of idiopathic aplastic anemia in a dog was characterized by pancytopenia and bone marrow aplasia. Erythroid colony‐forming units (CFU‐E) were not detected in bone marrow culture. Addition of the doq's serum to CFU‐E culture from control dogs failed to suppress colony formation, suggesting that humorally‐mediatedsuppression at theCFU‐E level was not a cause of the aplastic anemia.
