Plain-English summary

A 3-year-old Thoroughbred filly was diagnosed with a type of cancer called intramuscular hemangiosarcoma, which is a tumor in the muscles. This condition led to severe anemia (low red blood cell count) and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). After the horse passed away, an examination showed that there were multiple tumors in her muscles and that the cancer had spread to her lungs. Unfortunately, the outcome was not positive, as the cancer was widespread and severe.

Abstract

Intramuscular hemangiosarcoma resulting in severe anemia and thrombocytopenia was diagnosed in a 3-year-old Thoroughbred filly. Necropsy revealed multiple tumors within skeletal muscles and multiple pulmonary metastases.
