Abstract

SUMMARY The influence of sodium nitrite toxicosis on lactic dehydrogenase (ldh) and succinic dehydrogenase (sdh) was determined in the guinea pig. The changes were compared with the effects of hypoxia produced in guinea pigs kept in a sealed chamber containing a mixture of air and nitrogen. In nitrite toxicosis, activities of ldh and sdh in the myocardium were decreased. In the kidneys, the reduction in activity of both enzymes was associated with focalization of activity. Hyperemia of liver, spleen, kidneys, and lungs and vacuolar degeneration of hepatic cells and renal tubular epithelium occurred in nitrite toxicosis. Prolonged ingestion of sodium nitrite in the drinking water reduced appetite, body weight gain, and hemoglobin concentration.
