Original publication title: Malignant giant cell tumor of soft parts in a mare.

Species:
horse

Plain-English summary

A mare had two lumps taken out from her elbow, and tests showed that these lumps were made up of abnormal cells typical of a malignant giant cell tumor of soft parts, which is a rare type of cancer. The cells had large nuclei and a specific appearance under the microscope. Although this type of tumor is serious, it has a fair chance of being treated successfully.

Abstract

Two subcutaneous masses were removed from the elbow of a mare. Histologically they were composed of islands of polygonal to plump spindlelioid cells with large nuclei, coarsely stippled chromatin, and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Findings were diagnostic for a malignant giant cell tumor of soft parts, a rare tumor with a fair prognosis.
