Plain-English summary

A horse was found to have a large tumor in its abdomen, specifically in an area behind the kidneys. This tumor had also spread to other parts of the body, including the brain, lungs, kidneys, and spleen. The diagnosis was confirmed through microscopic examination and specific tests that showed the presence of certain proteins. The tumor likely started from a group of nerve cells near the aorta. Unfortunately, the outcome of the treatment is not mentioned in the study.

Abstract

A large primary retroperitoneal sublumbar neoplasm in a horse, with disseminated neoplastic foci in the brain, lung, kidney and spleen is described. The diagnosis was based on light microscopical studies and positive immunostaining for neuron-specific enolase. Because of the location of the primary tumour mass, the aortico-sympathetic ganglion (organ of Zukerkandl) is proposed as the origin.
