Original publication title: Pancreatic insulin-secreting neoplasia in a 9-year-old Afghan hound.

Plain-English summary

A 9-year-old Afghan hound was brought in after experiencing repeated weakness and seizures following exercise. The vet diagnosed the dog with insulinoma, a type of tumor that causes excessive insulin production, leading to low blood sugar levels. During surgery, a mass in the pancreas was successfully removed. After the procedure, the dog's symptoms improved, and it was able to return to normal activity without further episodes.

Abstract

An Afghan hound was presented with recurring episodes of weakness progressing to seizures after exercise. Insulinoma was diagnosed by demonstrating excessive insulin secretion in the presence of hypoglycemia. A pancreatic mass was identified and removed during an exploratory laparotomy. Surgical and pathological findings, diagnosis, and clinical management are discussed.
