Original publication title: Pancreatic insulin-secreting neoplasm (insulinoma) in a West Highland white terrier.

Species:
dog

Plain-English summary

A West Highland white terrier was brought to the vet after experiencing low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and suddenly collapsing. The vet diagnosed the dog with an insulinoma, which is a tumor in the pancreas that causes excessive insulin production. This diagnosis was confirmed through blood tests and imaging, followed by surgery to examine the tumor. Treatment involved removing the tumor, which helped stabilize the dog's blood sugar levels and improve its overall health.

Abstract

A West Highland white terrier was evaluated because of persistent hypoglycemia and an acute episode of collapse. A pancreatic insulin-secreting neoplasm (insulinoma) was diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs, serum glucose levels, serum insulin levels, abdominal ultrasonography, and exploratory laparotomy with histologic evaluation of neoplastic tissue.
