Plain-English summary
A 25-year-old Appaloosa gelding was having ongoing issues with weight loss and diarrhea. The veterinarian suspected a condition called protein losing enteropathy, which means the horse was losing important proteins through its intestines. Unfortunately, the horse was euthanized, and further tests showed that cancerous lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) were invading the lining of both the small and large intestines. The tests confirmed that the horse had a specific type of cancer known as epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma. Sadly, the treatment options were not pursued due to the horse's condition at the time.
Abstract
A 25-year-old Appaloosa gelding was evaluated for chronic weight loss and diarrhea. A clinical diagnosis of protein loosing enteropathy was made and the gelding was euthanized. Histology revealed neoplastic lymphocytes infiltrating the mucosa of the small and large intestine. Immunohistochemistry was positive for CD3, consistent with epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma.
