Plain-English summary

A 4-year-old female horse had a tumor found on the back wall of her rectum, which was identified as a type of cancer called leiomyosarcoma. To remove the tumor, she needed to be put under general anesthesia, and the surgery was done very carefully. Although the entire tumor couldn't be taken out completely, it has not come back in the 18 months following the surgery.

Abstract

A mass originating from the dorsal rectal wall of a 4-year-old mare was diagnosed as a leiomyosarcoma. General anesthesia and meticulous surgical dissection were required to effect removal. In spite of incomplete excision, as indicated by histologic sections, the mass has not recurred in the 18 months since removal.
