Plain-English summary

In three horses that had testicles that did not descend into the scrotum (a condition known as cryptorchidism), doctors found abnormal growths called teratomas, which also had cysts. These growths showed unusual bone development in a specific area near the blood supply. To remove the cysts surgically in two of the horses, the fluid inside them had to be drained first. While there has been some suggestion that certain cancer cells could cause these teratomas, none of the three horses showed any signs of cancer in their tumors. Overall, the findings indicate that the teratomas were not cancerous.

Abstract

In three horses with abdominally retained testicles, teratomas with cyst formation were found. Bone development in the head of the epididymis, near the vascular supply of the tumor, was a consistent finding. Aspiration of the cystic portion of the tumor was necessary for surgical removal in two cases. Although germinal carcinoma cells have been suggested as the cause of teratomas, evidence of malignancy was not seen in any of the three tumors.
