The Clinician's Approach to Equine Cardiology

Abstract

SUMMARY The author considers some of the difficulties the clinician may be faced with when giving an opinion on a horse with a cardiac abnormality. The 3 types of cardiological cases presented to the practitioner are described. The first 2 categories both exhibit a reduction in performance either with loss of bodily condition or without it. The third group, which is the most troublesome for the clinician, involves the horse which shows a cardiological abnormality but is otherwise apparently normal. RÉSUMÉ L'auteur envisage quelques unes des difficultés que rencontre le clinicien lorsqu'il doit formuler une appréciation sur un cheval porteur d'une anomalie cardiaque. Les trois groupes de cas que peut rencontrer le praticien sont décrits. Dans les deux premières catégories on rencontre des sujets montrant une diminution des performances avec ou sans perte de condition. Le troisième groupe, le plus délicat pour l'appréciation, comprend les chevaux qui malgré une anomalie cardiaque, sont apparemment normaux. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Der Autor bespricht einige der Schwierigkeiten, die der Kliniker bei der Beurteilung cardialer Abnormitäten antrifft. Es folgt eine Beschreibung der drei Typen von Herzfällen, die dem Praktiker vorgestellt werden. Die zwei ersten Kategorien zeichnen sich beide durch einen Leistungsabfall aus entweder mit Gewichtsverlust oder ohne. Die dritte Gruppe ist für den Kliniker die schwierigste. Sie unfasst diejenigen Pferde, die wohl einen Herzbefund aufweisen, daneben aber anscheinend normal sind.
